Brownless at home
Rev Philip Brownless - former Burma Campaign Officer

My regiment (1st Battalion the Essex Regt.) was put in behind the lines near Kohima (in Burma), to march, exhausted, over jungle covered mountains.
The fighting was bitter and the wounded, whom we could not get out, were bayoneted to death by the enemy. To these memories were added the tales of the terrible suffering of POWs in Japanese hands. But I decided it is up to individuals to make moves towards reconciliation if we hope for a peaceful world for our grandchildren. I should like to commend enthusiastically the heroic work of Keiko and the healing brought about by Agape and by the words and actions of many Japanese ex-servicemen I know.
